Film Review: ‘Beyond Sherwood Forest’ (2009)

I’m not ashamed- I love the SyFy channel and especially its indulgent made-for-TV movies. One of the best I’ve seen in a long time is ‘Beyond Sherwood’, starring Robin Dunne (as, um, Robin) Erica Durance as Maid Marian, and Julian Sands (he of ‘A Room With a View’ fame)  hamming it up gloriously as a baddie named, er, Malcolm. (Think blonde Guy of Gisborne.) The plot is basically thus: Malcolm is determined to capture Robin, legendary outlaw and the boy who watched him kill his [Robin’s] father, with the help of a changeling woman who can transform into a dragon. As the movie unfolds, we learn more about the dragon-woman Alina, and her tragic life as Malcolm’s slave.

Robin Dunne and Erica Durance as Robin and Marian

Having said that, its a frothy, funny, interesting homage to the films that have gone on before it (for example: ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’) and yet it is clearly champing at the bit  to be as original as possible. And dare I say it, it pretty much works. It’s all well-acted, even though the plot is a little predictable and cheesy at times, it’s a good movie to watch while escaping winter by wallowing on the sofa in your pyjamas. Recommended.

Overall rating: 8 out of 10 stars.
